Can I use the Ergo Baby Carrier to face my baby out, in a front-carry?

We get asked this question a lot, and the short answer is, no, the Ergo Baby Carrier is not specifically designed for a front, facing out position. This doesn't mean it can't be done (the Ergo will accommodate Kangaroo-style of an older baby), but we don't recommend it. One of the many unique characteristics of the Ergo is the ergonomical seated position that your baby is in, when being carried. This positioning supports the spine, hips and thighs of your baby in such a way to prevent compression of this delicate and developing area. It is therefore not advisable to wear your baby facing out. The many parents using the Ergo do not generally find this to be a problem as there are still so many things for a baby to look around and be stimulated with, and their baby has the added benefit of feeling extra safe and secure against their parents chest.

Here at Parenting By Nature we are advocates of our babies facing inward towards the parent in the vertical front carry position.  Dr. Eveline Kirkilionis describes it best in her book “A Baby Wants To Be Carried.” “Infants in outward-facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli that become overwhelming.  In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation.  Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you…..never out.”
