Organic Cotton Indian Prefolds - Benefits of Organic
Cotton that was grown many years ago generally involved techniques that allowed for the sustainable harvesting of the material. It did not permanently deplete resources or create unhealthy living conditions that threaten workers, wildlife and the environment, as it does today. There are many pesticides used in the growing of 'conventional' cotton that create a health hazard we are only beginning to understand the effects of. Some of these pesticides are considered to be the most toxic chemicals in the world!
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. We've summarized only 10 of the reasons we feel organic cotton is an important consideration, not only for cloth diapers, but for all our "cotton" requirements.
Top 10 Reasons to Choose Organic Cotton
1. Reduces Toxins that Pollute the Earth
Considering cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop in the world, the pesticides and toxins used in it's production, polluting our earth, are enormous. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides, insecticides or fertilizers. Organic cotton instead has a low environmental impact by replenishing and
maintaining soil fertility, reducing the use of toxic agents, and
building biologically diverse agriculture by attracting beneficial insects and wildlife.
2. Chemical and Formaldehyde Free!
Clothing made from Organic Cotton is chemical-free and free of Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a gas commonly employed as a preservative. Formaldehyde is used in many industries and has been used on clothing to combat mildew and give a permanent press effect. Exposure to excess levels can create breathing problems and cause headaches. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that formaldehyde may reasonably be anticipated as a carcinogen. Babies are more vulnerable to toxic agents that come in contact with their skin and respiratory system, therefore organic cotton clothing is gentler on the skin and healthier for baby.
3. Softer, Stronger (and Safer!) Fabrics
Organic cotton is often considered the highest of quality. Wearing clothes that are inherently chemical-free is just plain
good. Organic cotton actually feels softer than regular cotton
products, and without unnecessary chemical exposure, fabric will endure less wear and tear over time. With a more durable, longer lasting end product, this also means your purchase is quite economical in the long run. By choosing organic cotton, you will reap the benefits of this fabrics beauty, comfort and strength, while minimizing harm to the environment and all living creatures.
4. Safer Dyeing & Printing
Only low impact, fiber-reacting dyes or natural vegetable-based dyes can be used in certified organic cotton production. These are unlike the dyes which conventional cotton manufacturer's use, containing heavy metals and other toxins. Similarly, low-impact, water-based inks for printing are used on organic cotton products.
5. Supports Sustainable Agricultural Practices
Organic sources of fertilizer, including manure and compost, improve the microbial activity of the soil, resulting in a healthier 'living soil'. Conventional farming reduces the health of the soil by using soil-destroying chemicals to fertilize plants. Conventional cotton causes devastation to our land, air, water and all living creatures. Organic cotton does not. Organic farms work the natural way. They don’t use chemicals or artificial fertilizers, so they attract more insects, birds, wild animals and wild plants. Together these work to keep the environment alive and sustainable. It also means that the soil is healthier and more fertile. The short-term cost savings of buying conventional cotton clothing do not outweigh the long-term cost of cleaning up the environmental damage caused by growing it. Investing in organic cotton promotes an economy free of such hidden costs.

6. Protects our Quality of Water
Chemicals, pesticides and insecticides used in the growing of conventional cotton crops contaminate groundwater systems and more. Sprayed from the air,
these highly toxic chemicals can drift into surrounding neighborhoods, poison farm workers, contaminate air,
ground and surface water and cause major eco-system imbalances. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates many of these chemicals - some of which are known carcinogens - are already polluting the primary drinking water for more than half of the country's population (USA).
7. Improved Health of Agricultural Workers
Working environments are better for those on farms where organic cotton is produced. A National Cancer Institute study found that farmers exposed to herbicides had a cancer risk six times greater than non-farmers. In California, reported pesticide poisoning among farm workers suffer the highest rates of occupational illness in the state. Farm worker health is also a serious problem in developing nations, where pesticide use is poorly regulated. The health risks of pesticide exposure include birth defects, reproductive disorders and weaker immune systems. An estimated 1 million people are poisoned annually by pesticides.
8. Improved Heath for our Children
Pesticides, bleaches and chemicals can remain in the fibers of cotton even after washing, and are easily absorbed by the skin. Our precious children are the most sensitive to this. Not only is the conventional cotton "crop" exposed to a multitude of chemicals, but during the process of converting raw cotton into clothing,
chemicals are again added to the product. These include petroleum scours,
softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants,
ammonia and formaldehyde, just to name a few. A baby's skin is much more susceptible to absorbing chemicals they are exposed to on a daily basis. In
addition, their immune systems are not equipped to handle toxin
overload. Choosing organic cotton can help lessen the effects of these toxins on your child's system over time.
9. No Hidden Costs
We've touched on costs when we mentioned the fact that organic cotton produces a softer, stronger end product, and that organic cotton invests in a sustainable economy. Many will argue that organic cotton costs too much, or simply more than conventional cotton. But what about the hidden costs that result from the production of conventional cotton? The result of pesticide use in conventional farming leaves much behind that somebody has to pay to clean up. Money from taxes pays to remove these harmful chemicals from our air, environment and drinking water. Also, we must take into account the cost on our health, our children's health, and the health of the worker's directly exposed to the harmful chemicals which are void in the production of organic cotton. Organic methods don’t have hidden costs. While the initial costs of organic cotton may be more expensive, the long-term advantages are priceless.
10. For our Children, our Families, our Future
"We have not inherited the Earth from our fathers. We are borrowing it from our children." (Lester Brown) Organic cotton clothing is not only a great
choice for you and your children but choosing organic cotton makes
a worldwide impact in so many ways. We are protecting future generations of children and their families, and the future of our children's and grandchildren's planet.
Conventional cotton farming is one of the most environmentally destructive agricultural practices - harming the air, water, soil, and farmers’ health and safety as well as the surrounding environments. At the moment we may end up paying more for organic products, however this can change as demand for organic cotton increases. By spending on organic products, you are using your consumer power wisely and adding your voice to the environmental movement. The pay-back is tremendous: better health for our children, our families, the planet and all her creatures.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Unbleached Prefolds
Melanie Doan of Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) asks us...
Q: Are prefold cloth diapers really that difficult to fold?
A: Prefold cloth diapers are not really that difficult to fold, but there is an initial learning curve as there is with most new experiences. Since most parents are used to seeing and using disposables, the transition to cloth diapers seems scarier than it needs to be. We're hoping to change that perspective, one bum at a time.
Whether you choose to use prefold cloth diapers, fitted cloth diapers or pocket cloth diapers, you will have to learn a few basic techniques at the beginning, in order to adequately prevent leaks. But don't worry! We've been right where you are - new to using cloth diapers - and we're happy to help! Folding prefolds is not as difficult as it may seem, and after a few days of using your new diapers, you will be folding them just as quickly and finding them just as easy to use as disposables.
With every purchase of prefolds we will include a document with complete instructions called How to Fold Prefolds. This is a great resource for beginners! To summarize, using prefolds can be as easy as folding them in thirds (image 1), laying the prefold inside of the diaper cover with a cloth diaper liner on top (optional) (image 2), and fastening the diaper and cover securely on baby (image 3).
How to Use Prefolds

It's really that easy! Remember, prefold cloth diapers are the SAME cloth diapers that diaper services across Canada - from Vancouver to Halifax - choose to use with their daily, bi-weekly, or weekly diaper service. If they were that difficult to use, diaper services would not have any business at all. Prefolds really are the most reliable, dependable, adjustable and long-lasting cloth diaper available. And let's not forget how incredibly affordable prefolds are! At only $3-5 each, you would be savings hundreds of dollars with your diapering choice, even if you chose organic cotton!

Our Complete Care Guide will also accompany your order, with washing instructions and helpful hints and tips to help you get the MOST out of your cloth diapering experience.
